During our recent trip out to the V&A to see the extraordinary Alexander McQueen exhibition we couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the ultra modern, ‘Jellyfish’ dress, which had originally caught our eye back in 2009 when Gaga (McQueen’s biggest fan) debuted the very outfit in her music video for ‘Bad Romance’.
After another hit of McQueen, we watched Gaga’s video back and instantly realised that this was not just a music video but a homage to her friend and muse, Alexander McQueen. His designs form the centrepiece for the video, creating wildly dramatic imagery throughout, capturing the attention of millions, perhaps without even realising it.
McQueen and Gaga seem like a match made in heaven but he has been a form of inspiration for so many artists who we look up to today. For instance, he is responsible for the iconic Union Jack jacket worn by Bowie for his 1997 ‘Earthing’ album cover, the impact of that alone stimulating millions of creative minds to this day.
Other friends and collaborators who were heavily influenced by McQueen include Bjork, Daphne Guinness and Philip Tracy; people who disregard the norm and embrace the possibilities of something new. For this reason we’ve put together a selection of celebs flying the McQueen flag with pride, we hope you enjoy!
